I got referrals at meta, paypal, adobe, and tiktok for swe roles like 2 weeks ago and either never heard back or was rejected literally the next day. I get now i shouldve asked to be referred to exclusively front end engineer roles instead so that was mostly on me. But i cant help but think that the other factor besides my stupidity was that my resume is just complete garbage.

I'm 19, don't have much experience (2–3 yoe), and don't have a college degree. So i phrased stuff on my resume just desperate as fuck to stand out and be given a single chance. Sorry in advance for the cringe.

Please be as critical as possible. Genuinely grateful for anything

edit: thanks everyone. i'll do better.

    > no college degree

There’s your problem. Go back to school, finish your degree, and get an internship to full time conversion via on campus recruiting.

Also I’m not saying somehow that degrees make you a better engineer. It’s just how our society works. You’re only making it much harder on yourself if you don’t have that piece of paper

You also have to remember that the people actually looking at your resume at big faang or bigger companies are usually not technical at the beginning. Recruiters just scan your resume for the basics before filtering you out or in. Basics being: does this person have a degree or not

I would try smaller startups and hope to get recognized there if you really don’t want to do a degree

ugh look i feel bad about it too. i just wish i could be noticed without finding some bullshit roundabout way of going about it. i always explain my situation w education, and it's never been an issue so far. i'm just praying for some name-brand company to give me a chance so i can wipe that shit off the resume for good. thanks for the input. sorry for the cringe

If you're 19 go and get a useful degree. It's going to be increasingly difficult for you to standout as competition arises.

  • Chicken and egg problem.. Big names aren't calling you because there are no big names in your resume. I've been there, done that. Unless you're some kind of legend in the open source circuit, I say work your way up company tiers.

If you didn't complete a B.S. degree don't write "B.S. Cognitive Science & Machine Learning", as if you learned anything in those 5 months. I would reject your resume just for that.

tempting, but the company internally distinguishes between jr/mid/sr level engineers, so i was worried i would fail a background check or something
      Mar 8
    • It won’t matter, I did exactly this. You don’t have to give your official title until the background checks and at which point they’re not going to be comparing what you give to what’s on your resume. They’re just trying to make sure you’ve actually worked at these companies
