Role change in 11th hour of interviews

Questions: How often do you/candidates see a role change at the offer stage?

I’ve had four roles get to offer stage this year. Two have switched the role at the offer stage.

One switched to a vp of a different area of my function, but that area was of no interest. I declined despite a healthy comp offer (+20%)

The most recent offer I received went to offer, and they down leveled the role last minute, title is on par with peers. (Think of role being posted as svp and all peers are vps, offered title is vp)
Pay is great ~40% pay raise, but the role is a a backwards step in my career with less responsibilities than what I applied for and am responsible for in my current role.

How common are role shifts in the interview process? Am I just unlucky? Or am I avoiding red flags by turning down companies that change roles last minute . Should I chase the $ and not care?

Yo. Sometimes a question is just a question. Salary-possessed is not a good look.

I knew you were probably aged so I asked you to share politely. Someone else would have written TC or GTFO.

When you ask something from a community, you also have to give something back. Sharing your current compensation and YOE is considered BLIND tax.

Being selfish is not a good look.

Happens all the time the last two years as companies try to balance bringing in new talent without upsetting the current talent they think they can’t afford to lose but is actually dead weight. Changing your title to align to complaining current talent is a reflection on that, not on you. Avoid those peers and that culture. Companies looking for true leadership do not do that and know what level they need. Good luck.
