Reputation of Salesforce Research and AWS AI?

Dec 24, 2021 13 Comments

How are the reputations of Salesforce Research and AWS AI among the research and applied ML communities? Both are scientist roles on research teams with the expectation of applied contributions.

AS initial offer is treefiddy, wondering if I should go through with the Salesforce loop...

I will add...if you dont already have another offer, go forward with salesforce loop to get something. Having a second offer gives you massive leverage in negotiations. I had a few FAANG offers and went from initial 205k offer to 500k.

I just finished a PhD in ML and have spent the past 3 years at Brain, MSR, etc. In my opinion from the research side of things, Salesforce and AWS have no reputation in ML outside of very small niches. Although, Salesforce had a surprisingly cool SSL paper not too long ago. But I've not once come across an Amazon paper, and only 1 or 2 Salesforce papers. No one ever talks about these places, and like me, are surprised when we come across a paper from them.

Applied is a different story, I am sure.

A general good perception is helpful. Imo I'll bet on the team interviewing - and ignore company wide understanding. You should be good enough to judge if they are better researchers than the other.

    • Assuming both are equal (I know people at both), the tie-breaker would be general perception. I'm also thinking in terms of how it will affect my next move X years down the road.

Imo no two sets of people are equal. Tbc I see your point of view.. but I don't think you'll get a clear answer to general perception on blind or a forum.

If there was a clear perception you wouldn't need to ask. And at the end a job for RS etc should be decided mainly on how good the team and their roadmap aligns with your research view. Plus how long they've been there etc etc. Industry it's important to realise and assess how good your team's vision aligns with company. A general forum discussion may give some hints at stretch, but it won't solve or give a decisive local answer to your profile.

Depends on the area of research.
Acc to someone senior in a top research org, they see people from Salesforce research more favourably than amazon applied scientist.
