Google India Program Manager - Recruiter says before start of interview process - I am above their pay level?

So, google india is starting interview process for google cloud, delivery center, customer success, program manager role with me.

Recruiter upfront while scheduling the rounds and running me through prep session, tells me, that I might be put in L4, and since my current compensation is 51 lakhs per annum, I am already above their L4 band salary range so they might not even be able to offer me what I am making right now!!

I dont know how to react or even go through the interview rounds.. I told her I want to aim for L5, because I am already in leadership roles in program management from last 6 years, out of 12 years of my total work experience, that too in all tier 1 silicon valley companies!

Recruiter changed her track after this, but she kept saying if you earn 100 and google’s range for that is 80, you will only get offered 80!

I am genuinely stumped, is it really so bad, the recruiter said the best they might do is match my current compensation!

This is ridiculous, upfront even before going through the interviews.

Please advise!

  • On the contrary this is good.
    I have had experience going through 6 rounds and then landing in the situation where they were not able to match up with my expectations.

    Felt like waste of energy and effort and also lost the chance for next interview for 3-6 months.

      Ohh my, that is not good. I had exact same experience last year they intetviewed me 5 rounds and told me they took someone internally who they will “groom” for the role!

    Why is this ridiculous. If company is able to get similar calibre employees at a lesser cost, they will do it. It's good that the employer is upfront about it, so that their and your time is not wasted.

      At times there are budget and level constraints because of head count planning. Don't be so hung up on it. There are better companies for PM roles

      Thank you, yes - I am most certainly very happy with my current org and role.. just want to pursue this because of the “google” brand name, and I am being very honest here :)

    Not sure what the op is looking for here? The recruiter is clear on the comp and the level. If op believes they are much more capable, then they can just interview where they will get this salary.

      So most of the times these positions open up with a particular level requirement. In the internal portal, it specifies the level range like L4 position, open to hire L3/L4 or L4/L5. They are looking to hire for certain levels only. The problem is they don't shy away from hiring highly experienced folks for L4, just because there are so many folks available to come at L4 because of brand and other perks. Tell your apprehension to recruiter, make up your mind on the lowest level/pay you are going to be ready to join G and proceed accordingly.

      Google certainly is an goal I want to reach, but not by downlevelling myself, my title, my pay so much! I will update here what they finally offer me even if I dont take it! 🙏🏻

  • You have 12 years exp, you shouldn't try for any level below L5. For L5, base + stock + bonus should easily take CTC to 1cr+

      Thank you @codesurfer, yes - unless it is financially benefitting as well, its no use to leave the current organisation just for google brand name and downlevel my title and pay both... I really want to work for google but not with these stakes! :(

    • Try Microsoft, Atlassian, Razorpay etc. They seem to be offering on par or better than Google. Times have changed and G is not the King it used to be atleast in terms of pay.
