Is 1 - 3 YOE the dead zone in the Bay Area SWE job market?

Oct 8, 2020 6 Comments

Not at Infosys, I am at a different company that is no-name.

Is 1-3 YOE the dead zone for new SWE jobs? It seems like most companies hire their juniors through new grad and for the rest of their hires they are only looking for more experienced people with 3YOE minimum ideally, many times even 5+.

There appears to be little to no headcount available for the general 1-3 YOE range. What have your experiences been in the Bay Area? Does anyone coming from a no-name company in this 1-3 YOE range have a chance?

Location: Bay Area, not on visa.

From everything I've seen new grads have it worse.

3 YOE should be able to apply for 1 level above new grad and be pretty sought after if they have a good resume, even now I think.

It's just rly bad right now because it's near EOY, election and coronavirus but the market was pretty good earlier this year, even for 1 YOE

Do you think it will pick up in Q1 or Q2 of 2021?

Not a SWE but this seems to be the case for business roles in tech as well. Yes there were some exceptions (those with 1 yoe getting roles requiring 3 yoe) but not after Covid started unfortunately
