Do Tech companies value the title (Director/ VP of Engineering or Product) at smaller firms or just consider the total relevant YOE? In other words does taking up a Director or VP role at a smaller firm or startup increase your chances of getting into top tech companies at a higher level eventually or just better to apply to the target tech firms directly?

Beware of titles. Levels and titles are different. Example at Salesforce you are a Senior Director of product managing a team of 3 PMs. In other companies principle or group product managers manage as many.

Take Netflix. Everyone who isn’t a manager (tech) is just a senior engineer. But you can have some making $300k and others making $800k.

Obviously there’s a large gap in ability within the same band.

Well yeah, because it's the role that makes the difference. But if you're a VP at a 100 person company you might only come in as a junior director at FAANG or even just an EM at first.
