Hey folks, thinking of moving to Boston for family reasons. Seems like cost of living is high (same as bay area in cambridge and maybe 75% if you are willing to move away a bit to the burbs). Looking to learn more about:

1) The city and culture from other transplants
2) cool tech companies that may have exciting and well paying jobs
3) Start up scene in Boston
4) stories of others who tried and loved/hated it

Staff mechanical engineer with 8 yoe, TC 320.

    1) Boston is one of the oldest cities in US. Lot of history and life in the city. Culture is vibrant. Has a lot of Irish and British influence. It's so much better than Bay Area.
    2) Not as many as you can see in SF Bay Area. Probably comparable to Austin.
    3) Okayish. Harvard and MIT grads start off something but eventually move to Silicon Valley.
    4) Lived in New England for 15 years. Loved it. CoL in the city is pretty high. But, as you move to a suburb ~20 miles away, it drastically drops.

Mechanical engineers have very less opportunities in the Boston area. Forget getting half of that TC being a mechie.

Your TC is 320k being a mechanical engineer? Are you going to move within Google?

      OP
@Whatevah!: Could use google gig remotely for a few months to transition but would need a new job. Guessing you have lived/worked there before ? Assumed there would be some options due to medical, biotech and robotics.

There would be, yes, but the options are very limited ( Know a mechie friend ). Also the pay is very pathetic, maybe 120-150k max for a Mech Eng.
Also, as you must know, the weather solemnly sucks there and you are right, the cost of living is not less in Cambridge etc, only when you move to suburbs with at least an hour commute into the city it becomes lesser.

All in all be prepared for a massive TC hit with extremely sad weather and much lesser opportunities.

  • Currently in Boston. Mechanical engineering background but now in management. Like others stated high TC here js in software etc, not much manufacturing in downtown but a bunch outside 20-30 mins of Boston.
Cultures pretty cool, has its ups and downs like everywhere. Weather is something to get use to but honestly it’s not bad. Winter November-April. Rent is pricey 2500-5000 for a one bedroom depending on amenities and location.
