I know this is a new field and everyone is making it up as they go along. But I'd love to get in touch with senior leaders in this area for mentorship and career development.

Has anyone found groups that do this? Any tips? I've considered leaving for larger companies to get more structure and development, but I'm not quite ready to leave Twitch yet. For now, I'd like to establish a relationship with someone that wants to improve their coaching skills.

If you don't mind can you share a little bit info on the career advancement path for data analyst/data scientist within Twitch? And what made you want to switch to a bigger company?

Also consider how "data-driven" Amazon, maybe you want to consider finding a mentor or opportunities there?

      OP
Twitch is pretty disconnected from the mother ship. We've had a bunch of surveys reflecting this. So I see it as an external company (hence the tag).

Twitch doesn't have anything in the way of feedback / development / advancement. Leadership in the data field goes as high as L6, a director (equivalent of E5/T5 at FB/G). It's his first job, and he doesn't have experience in developing a team.

So, Twitch is a large company that has the structural deficiencies of a small company. I'd rather move to a place that has formal development programs in place. And if that's the answer ("you won't get mentorship unless you leave"), I'm ok hearing that.

Thank you so much DingleBell for sharing your experience! Considering Twitch was sort of a "Startup", this is probably part of its growing pain. Btw what did you mean "his first job", this person had no experience but became a director? Were you referring to the fact that he has no people management experience?

From your description, I am assuming you are more interested in pursuing the route of a data expert instead of going for "people manager" or "product manager"? Then it sounds like Data Scientist at FB (hiring ton of DS) or Amazon (incredibly data driven) will help you advance your career.
