Once upon a time, FAANG didn't exist. Facebook was brand new, and Amazon was unprofitable. Netflix was mailing discs and lagged way behind Blockbuster. Apple was viewed as irrelevant (except by hipsters) before launching the iPod. Google was in its search infancy and just barely starting to mine user data. I graduated around this time. Tech jobs were always around, but nothing like today. When I entered the industry, Accounting was the most in demand and highest paying job available. Big 4 consulting was the hottest area to go to. McKinsey and BCG were super exclusive because of their automatic 6 figure salary and free M7 MBA programs. Goldman Sachs had the highest overall pay for any employer. GPAs also heavily mattered; some places even had 3.5 minimum requirements. Who else remembers this time or earlier?
