They are “the same level” in theory, but anecdotally, Google L4 seems much harder to land. I see way more 2yoe L5’s for example.

Google L4 is Amazon L5 without Leadership Principles, thus it's higher.

But then again amazon did make great products like many of the aws offerings so question is if they could’ve without the LPs or if they did it in-spite of the LPs

Interesting! I see googleyness being thrown around on Linkedin and with friends so often. I do agree that citing LPs for everything is cringy af. I have noticed that it makes communicating easier however.

    Doesn't AL5 have more scope than GL4?

      OP
As an Al5 I have to imagine it does, moving to GL4 in a month.

AL5’s run full projects with multi-team impact, with the addition of a Pm if the project is large enough. From what I hear, GL4’s are glorified code monkeys

Levels like amzn L5 are not a single point on a multi axes plot. It is a range that varies in all aspects like compensation, scope, yoe, team/project. My understanding is that the bottom of amzn L5 is lower than google L4 and the top is higher than the top of google L4 (on the project scope axis).

TC wise , G L4 wins (maybe ? with new AMZ bands who knows) but AMZ L5 hands down for scope and growth.
