7 YOE in the data department with python/sql familiarity. Managing multiple projects, vendors, and client escalations on the data. Automated many processes and increased efficiency drastically over my time here, but feel no matter what else I do there is no room for growth unless I get a management role. There is no senior analyst or associate role here. Everyone outside of mgmt just falls into analyst pay band.

TC this year just raised to 112k, all base as no one in data besides managers get bonuses. Anyone have success in negotiating this with Bloomberg (again, in data department, not engineering)?

Also willing to hear where someone can go with my skills and what I should expect TC wise with my YOE.

If you can do python switch internally to engineering?

    • I think this is the best advice. Use internal mobility to PATH out . I have seen people switch to engineering go through FSD/Entry Level training.

Your time in BB and understanding of other parts of the BB will be very helpful for sure.

  • Unless you want to continue in that kind of role/career, my advice is to ditch global data and join engineering. Fresh grads make 175+ here. You probably wonโ€™t get that right away at BBG. Switch to engineering, stay for a year or two, interview outside and you can make close to 300K without too much effort. Thatโ€™s my two cents

Let me tell you a story which might help you make a decision.

After 5 years in GD, straight out of college...I was making 160K as an IC (not in the group which shall not be named). A few months ago, I was forcibly moved to engineering. Immediately I got bumped to 190K. Manager suggests I have plenty of upside if I keep performing well.

That's the difference between GD and ENG.

Yea Im not the advanced into coding. Can write basic scripts of python and sql, but also dont want to be eng full time. May try to make a move into business / product for that higher bump. Problem with the attrition is exactly this - there is no elevated data analyst role to progress to, were all in the same pay band.

Yeah I get it. For what it's worth, I've seen pms get paid very well, if you want to go down that route.

Also, that da3 role *was* the elevated analyst role when I was in GD. Spares you from adsks, you get a bonus...that was my experience at least, and that role was for good programmers.

It's definitely not product management though, and if you like that part of your work, I encourage you to go for Product. I know a couple of people in GD who did just that, and they are much happier.

  • Honest question. What do the ppl in GD actually do? Why are their TC so low? Are their skills very replaceable ?

    • Everything that doesn't require a PRQS. Honestly It varies drastically between ecosystems.

Yep, this is right...some people in GD are just doing manual entry all day, others are writing terminal screens. It's pretty wild, and somewhat dependent on the relationship a data team has with its partner engineering team.
