It boggles my mind to think why Chinese government would even think of putting chains on their glorious tech companies. Any inputs from people who know better?

Chinese internet giants are making too much money, which makes other people jealous. China after all is communism and wants to equalize ruch and poor.

Wouldn't the general populace be proud of the world wide reach of their homegrown product? I imagine there's no lack of nationalistic/patriotic pride even under communism.

Overpowered tech giants undermine communists' power.

Well that was predictable ...

Chinese apps are notorious for shady background data collection. In ole days, pc game client scan whole disk periodically to detect game cheats. Then sell user data to third party for quick bucks. The whole interest knows your social security if you ever registered in a single freaking app. Also, ad ranking are pure evil in Chinese app. Third party repair shops are advertised “official apple device repair” as long as they pay a hefty tax back to big tech. Lots of people get their device robbed going to those “top ranked phone repair”. Cops and big tech ain’t doing shit to fix it. That being said, happy to see regulation in data space. However, most of the time new policy is just bootlicker pleasing whoever in the power and make zero positive impact to users and tech industry.

So that's why tiktok is much more addictive than Facebook equavalent?

Don’t get me wrong. Their app or algorithms do kick ass. However there’s unethical practices that need to be addressed during aggressive expansion.
