Thinking of accepting an offer at MSFT Azure. Thing is I know hiring manager of another team I really like, but they are opening their position in one month — I’m not interested in declining current offer to wait.

So question is how soon could I internal transfer? I heard there’s a minimum 6 months to wait? At Amazon you can switch at any time... So having a grace period seems a little barbaric to me.

Officially, there's no minimum. That said, switching teams just one month in would burn some bridges. Joining a team with intent to leave before you even start is a bit of a dick move.

Best if you can spin the internal move as an opportunity of a lifetime switch.

I definitely wouldn’t for sure leave. I just quite like the other hiring manager, and it would indeed be a lifetime thing — between two different career paths/domains.

You can apply for anything, but if the hiring manager doesn't blow you off you'll probably get an offer to move at L62 (maybe with assurances to evaluate you for L63 at 6mo/next review).

Transfer+promo is rare. Transfer+2xPromo is extremely rare.

  • AFAIK msft doesn't have a grace period

If you have an offer from a team, just go ahead and take it. The biggest thing is that other teams would wonder why you're looking so soon
