before Uber and lyft, people had normal jobs. Now they’re driving full time for Uber and lyft. Which led to this law. We need more people to fill normal jobs. The economy is propped up by these gig jobs but that is a bandaid on the real issue.
I was mainly responding to OP's claim that implicated that the Uber and Lyft gig economy somehow "replaced" normal jobs. With respect to taxis, but growing up in South Bay, taxis were never really a thing here, so not sure how taxis are relevant here.
@sony would I employ some one to fix a leak? No. But if I have a full grid of irrigation and water supply pipes, would I expect my army of plumbers to be contractors? Also no.
The skills for Uber drivers and taxi drivers are exactly the same, taxy drivers are employed by taxi companies or _buy_ their own license to be independent contractors. Why wouldn't Uber work the same way? They're just another taxi company.
Brave enough? These folks need to make a living and pay their bills. This court order simply pulls the rug from under their feet with no recourse/plan for an alternative. Ridership is lower anyways so for Lyft/Uber the impact of suspending service is lower on them than it is on the drivers.
