I wanted to continue my education at Northwestern in their online MS data science program. I was also considering Berkeley but their online data science program seems less flexible and more expensive.

Does anyone know about the acceptance rates for the Northwestern and Berkeley Masters programs? Can anyone comment on the quality, rigor, and flexibility at either program? #data #dataanalytics #datascience

TC ~$40/hr but part time

Why would you get another masters? If you still want to, Georgia techs program is cheap

The name brand and network. Money isn’t a big issue for me. I’m more interested in the quality and outcomes of a program

Just about to wrap up the program you’re asking about, feel free to PM. The program is pretty good and the Northwestern brand goes far and has recognition even outside of tech if you want to switch functions or industries at any point, unlike a school like UC-Berkeley or Georgia Tech for example which is more known inside of tech.

The NU program is good. I did it a few years ago. Feel free to PM me with any specific questions.

As to career progression, it certainly didn't hurt. The NU brand is strong. But...if you already have a masters, would you be paying for this one out of pocket?

  • It depends on what you want out of an MS. If you want somewhat easier coursework and just the degree to qualify yourself for higher compensation at some companies, you can go the data science program route.

If you want to learn the math and technical aspects to have a deeper understanding of the things you might apply in industry, you should go the statistics/engineering route, but expect to put in more work for more knowledge.

I was thinking that a brand name degree and network would get me more opportunities and compensation.

  • MS Data Science isn’t worth it in all honesty. You’re much better off doing financial engineering or statistics

Thanks for the insight. Was also considering a statistics MS but many programs have heavy math requirements, which I don’t have. Was hoping for a more program that is more open to people with less math background.
