Envy of all the Amazon L7 promos

Few years ago, I was an L6 in Amazon, in a role with a good trajectory towards PE. Then some political shit within the org happened, and I moved to another org, only to realize that the new org didn't really have the scope for anything above L6.

Given the circumstances, I decided to leave Amazon and moved to an E6 in Meta. Now it hurts seeing on LinkedIn all the Amazon PE promos :/. I feel like Amazon PE is one of the more respected roles in the industry, and while I know that objectively Meta E6 is not bad, it is nowhere near Amazon PE.

Please don't say that this whole "promo race" is stupid. I know it myself, and still that doesn't make me feel better 😞.

  • There are like ~1500 PEs now at Amazon. It’s not what it used to be when there there were just 150 or whatever. Similar story as you. Lots of old co workers now are PEs but I don’t look up to them.

As a long time L6 who was just promoted this quarter to PE, I feel this. For a long time, PE bar was so high that it pushed most competent engineers out and I think Amazon finally realized that.

On a side note, how are you liking Meta compared to Amazon? I’ve heard Meta E6 is brutal the first couple years.

Ex Amazon myself. Why do you think E6 is not equivalent to L7?

I agree Amazon used to keep the L6 L7 bar pretty high. But do you think there is a difference in scope? As an E6 can you be eligible for a L7 interview?

E6 is like 15% of the company at Meta
I imagine L7 at amazon is still around 2%

Amazon has a long history of being terrible about promotions. Almost unilaterally only promoting people too late (operating at the next level for 1+ years). They eventually improved the 4->5 process. Then a few years later they improved the 5->6 (though they did like 3 quick revisions on this). Sounds like they're trying to improve the 6->7 now

Amazon is devaluing their PE/L7 after a decade and a half upvaluing (???) that role. It basically was impossible to get.
