Seattle to sunnyvale?

Tldr: Which city (and zip code) do you recommend? I am looking for safe, good weather and future job opportunities.

I am considering moving to Sunnyvale, Irvine or other sunny places in California.

I’ve been in Seattle for many years and 6-month bad weather finally made me pull the trigger.

I plan to stay at FB a few more yrs (good team and opportunities) and i can work remotely so i could go to less tech concentrated cities like Irvine but i prefer staying close to tech hub as it could open up more start up/job opportunities in the future.

I have $1.7M house (with many years of payment left) and i think $7000/month is about the max i want to spend on housing as I prefer keeping most of my NW in stocks instead of all in house.

My current area is pretty safe so looking for the same in the next place.

I have a wife and a kid. Considering sending the kid to private school when we move.

Household tc $550K
Liquid-able nw $1.3M

Karl the fog is usually there in the mornings but burns off by Noon. Also, winters are usually much sunnier than the summers. It’s very typical NorCal costal weather - beautiful, rugged but not super warm or cold through the year. Fwiw - I’ve been in the Bay Area 25 hrs and have lived in the mid peninsula all the time, so don’t only take my input, but consider all other perspectives as well. Good luck!

You’re sleepless in Seattle. You wanna be shirtless in Sunnyvale. The main thing to remember is that a given $ buys you less housing, food and private education. Will FB do market correction if you move to CA? If yes, go for it. If not, move to Sacramento, Folsom city etc since you have remote work flexibility. If you are eyeing startup scene, you have scale back on everything else.

No market correction as Seattle and menlo park pay is the same. Looks like i have to pick 2 out of 3: start up opportunity, maximizing $ and sunshine.

  • Sunnyvale is a very expensive dump, please consider visiting it before you decide to settle down there. It will likely make your wife cry is she's used to a decent neighborhood in Seattle.

Irvine is way better but no vibrant tech scene. I am still struggling to understand why NorCal, the mecca of tech, is a 19th century NIMBY holdout when it comes to just living there.

If you want sunshine try LA or San Diego. There’s literally zero reason to move to the Bay Area with its super expensive housing or SF with its poop and needles on the streets
The value for $$$ just isn’t there
