Hi Blind Community,

What does it take to get into microsoft as a program manager? Do they look out for specific qualifications? Employee profiles from LinkedIn are not painting a clear picture.

  • Luck, skill, and a referral. Did I mention luck?

  • Product PMs seem to come in as university hires, or mid careers with a name company PM experience.

Business PMs (non tech) is where you’ll see huge variation in backgrounds, and for many of these roles, having been a v- is a way in because it shows consulting, communication skills and awareness of MSFT processes.

Product PM having been a v- = bad
Business PM having been a v- = good

A MBA is an easy way to get a recruiter interested for either PM type, otherwise it’s a lot of luck, specialized skills the team needs and super targeted referrals. NOT a web referral, those don’t help much but an insider referral right to a hiring manager or team.

  • Depends on the org and specifics. Some teams have a much higher bar than others. Some PMs are business-driven leaders, while others manage processes, communities, customer/partner relations, or even design UIs. Probably the only common requirement is communication skills.
