Is Google the end of the game ?

Jan 29 26 Comments

Ever since I got my Google offer and shared it with people at work and friends in tech, I always get funny reactions like « Whaaat? »

Professionally speaking is Google the target 🎯 for you to say « Arrived, I won’t move from here » ?

I used to think like this. Google was a goal. Now that I'm here, I found that it's just another work place - with one major exception. Fantastic WLB. And now, I've realized that WLB is all I care about.

I unintentionally found what I really wanted. So my plan is indeed to stay to enjoy this.

  • Wait until you realize you can actually get to higher comps by not getting stuck at promotion chances at FAANG, and by moving to smaller companies that need your expertise and pay well. (Especially at higher levels)

I think after 8-10 years experience, the demand from mid-size companies increase astronomically. It’s really hard to find high level folks with good resumes that have good experience and are not complacent to not look outside.

Staff level folks probably could get quicker principal+ promotions. And Managers could get to mid-management+ easier compared to FAANG.

The main thing I would look for is, is the company at a hyper growth stage, that’s when the demand for high level folks increase immensely.

Most people from consulting would be thrilled to get into anywhere big tech or any of the well funded startups. There's a bit of the extra Google factor but most of the reaction you're getting isn't Google specific.

And for many people who have ended up at Google, there's come a time where Google isn't right for them, and so they've left. The notion that any one employer is "the end of the game" is pretty narrow-minded if not asinine.

I say yes. Although you should be moving around in the mid career years, retiring at Google is better than at a more intense place like Meta or Netflix.
