I’m on track (I think) to get to Amazon L7 this year, and have offers from Microsoft and meta (among other companies that I’m not interested in joining ) . I’ve read in multiple
Blind posts that e6 at meta is a downgrade . The scope of work at 67@ msft seems really appealing to me , but I like the team I’m taking to at meta more . I’m also considering team switch at Amazon if I get promoted .

Can y’all help with this ? If an e6 is truly a downlevel compared to L7 at Amazon or l67 at Microsoft , would that still be worth taking ? Both Microsoft and meta offering approx 800k with some negotiation room. I’ve also heard from people that e6 at meta can be a pressure cooker .

Tc pre stock drop : approx 700k thanks to appreciation

  • Why would you tell us your TC pre stock drop? What is the point of that?

Just tell us what it is. No one cares what is was pre drop, everyone had high TC then and everyone is in the shit now.

E6 at meta is definitely not a downgrade in terms of TC. In terms of scope yes.
Tell me ,have your ever heard any fb E7 joining Amazon as L7.

As a human being, one wants best of all world. So even though E6 maps to L7 in terms of TC and engineering ladder but responsibility wise it's closer to E7.

If you can get E7 it is clear promotion for you.

A couple things to call out: Have you also tried looking at Google/Netflix/Apple/etc? You might have already but wanted to just say more competing offers goes a long way. Next, i know you mentioned liking the team but which manager seemed better? Managers can have a huge impact on your career and are just as important as team match.

and last, i would ask yourself how would you like your life to look in 3 to 5 years? Is there a bigger career or life goal you have? Then work backwards from there to ensure compatibility.

PS Congrats on the offers, keep killing it!

      Good pointers 👍
Only thing is too many offers will kill OP’s time and will make him more confused 🤓

Thanks for this , and great points . I did apply to other places . Some worked out some didn’t . But these are the 2 I’m considering for now . Other than staying at Amazon .

Meta team seems better in that it’s an area I want to diversify into . Msft will
Be more of the same as what I’ve done at Amazon so I have the expertise to hit the ground running . I think the manager at ms seemed better but I should probably have more meetings with them to suss it out .

  • If you can push offers to 1M it’s worth it I think. Otherwise I don’t see the point in switching for just 100k difference

I don’t think I understand . I have a (verbal) l67 . And I know that maps to L7 at Amazon . That’s my issue with meta giving an l6 . I’m wondering how much wiggle room I have wrt pay so that the lack of refreshers can be mitigated

    • There's no issue with meta giving you E6. That's the right level for your experience and current position.

Msft is up leveling you. With 800k TC you will be earning more than virtually everyone around you. You will most probably end up unqualified for a position, especially if it's an established project and this may cause tensions with other team members.
