Been interested in the Hubspot culture and product area, but not sure whether comp and growth opportunities line up with Amazon for experienced candidates. Anyone have data on what the typical offers are for HubSpot?

Currently SDE3 at Amazon

Coming from SDE3 you’d probably want to target Staff Engineer at HubSpot. Not sure what our recent Staff Engineer offers look like, but I think ~200k base, 500k/4 would be possible for a strong candidate. Lots of big challenges and growth opportunities for ambitious people.

There’s also the management track if you’re interested in that.

Thanks what’s the breakdown of coding vs design/project/people management for the different roles? I saw that there were openings for TL/EL roles.

It’s going to depend a lot on your preferences and the particular culture of the team/group you join. A tech lead runs a small team with 2-3 reports, so you should still be coding the majority of your time. An engineering lead runs a small team and also has 2-3 tech leads report to them. Some people treat this as a mostly people management role, while other engineering leads still code a lot.

The Staff role is still evolving. Previously you were still on a small team reporting to a tech lead, but now Staff engineers report to a Senior Engineering Manager or Director, and we’re trying to refocus these roles in terms of technical leadership, not just technical mastery. I think of the Staff role kind of like a mercenary for the group, working with engineering leadership to identify and fix the highest impact / biggest technical challenges. You should be flexible (you may need to bootstrap a new team, manage a tricky migration, build a proof-of-concept of a new system, or whatever else the business needs) and not have an ego (what the business needs isn’t always glamorous)
