Cant copy paste the email, just a gist of it:
Fragomen’s govt affairs team is stating that a presidential proclamation can come anytime now on the ban of entry of above 4 visas.
Exemption: health care workers, those engaged in COVID-19 research, essential to food supply chain and those whose employers have made efforts to recruit US workers.

Effective date of the ban is unknown but it could impact anyone entering on or after June 12th.

Unknown: if it will affect individuals who are already employed in one of the above categories and are outside for business or personal reasons.

They are urging everyone to come back if you can or reach out to your company’s immigration team immediately.

  • Sorry H1B and L1 folks on visa, but with economy like right now entering recession and hiring freeze everywhere, they do the right thing trying to protect USA citizens and residents. Those unemployed, should not be collecting unemployment but get hired for these few available positions.

    • The other minor difference being they are free to leave to any other country, including their own, whenever they want ...
Again, I am European, and I can't immigrate in india/china nearly as easily as with the h1b program. Should I complain? Is it a fundamental rightto live and work wherever I want ?

    • Yup I am also an immigrant, but I don't see myself entitled to everything in this country, I hope US eventually realizes foreign talents actually helps the economy, but in the end it's US citizens & government who have the right to decide what to do with immigration policy

“and those whose employers have made efforts to recruit US workers.” This made me laugh. How could an official command say something uncertain like this?

I am sorry to hear it scci52. Can’t believe this is happening. Like wtf Google? I conducted more than 100 interviews, and I personally knows more than 10 recruiters. But what the hell! This is not what I signed up for!

Honestly, I really can’t believe this happens at Google, like we are always hiring, and it is always general hiring, so there shouldn’t be any shortage of openings or etc. On the other hand, recruiters are not evaluated on retention rate of their hiring, they shouldn’t have such motivation. Majority recruiters are Americans and only a very small amount of them are immigrants.

I am not saying you are lying, but it is a bit hard to believe for me. If you can message me their name, I can look into it.

This wasn’t recent. I don’t think she is American. She worked for mindlance, but was recruiting for full time roles at G. Now works for F. If you absolutely need her LinkedIn, DM me. But it doesn’t matter. Because truthfully I honestly don’t think I would ever consider G again. Even if I had a G offer in hand I wouldn’t take it. No offense. I’ve been so disenchanted truthfully and G seems more and more like an evil company too these days. Didn’t they just remove “don’t be evil” from their culture values? Anyway, I’ve seen enough blatant search ahead manipulation the real election interference is happening on US soil. I understand this will get the G world to say I’m a tin foil hat trumptard. We all know G had a cry fest after Hillary lost in 2016. This isn’t normal. The video would be appropriate for a Hillary campaign not a room of G employees and management during business hours on campus. Among other reasons I use DuckDuckGo now. Besides Walmart is actually very innovative in my opinion and I believe in the mission. G seems like the place people go to validate their lc ability. then they leave once they feel an innovative itch. I can validate my lc ability every Saturday night contest.

I've seen more people go back in the last 2 years than in all the years before combined. TC in India is rising too, I'd make almost 300k in India for 2 years if I moved back (PPP equivalent of $1.2M) before it goes down to 200k (PPP equivalent of 800k) - savings wouldn't be significantly different than in the US.

  • Fun fact is even if USA kicks out Indians or treats them extremely badly, for every 1 Indian who has to return to India, there will be a 100 who'd want to come in. As long as things exist this way , no reform is going to happen. Demand and supply !. Things will only improve when USA becomes a less desired destination, and has to canvass people to come in.

That is never going to happen at all in this century. I am not holding my breath.

    • @Fahrenheit while you may have a point, nothing beats the bay area in innovation and there is a reason for that. Majority of the best tech schools are here in US with massive research funding. I am not here to trumpet US exceptionalism, all I am saying is the country will do absolutely fine if each of us visa holders leave, and to not live in that bubble, that visa holders are indispensable. Once there is a $20,000 surcharge on every H1B, companies will stop hiring visa folks.

There will be a medium term hiccup, which will be addressed by people taking their jobs with them, offshoring and as a last resort hiring Americans.

Post covid19 companies now know majority of dev work can be done remotely from anywhere.

Why would they ever hire here again if they transition to hiring folks offshore? They don't need to hire engineers here anymore.

Come back ? How? If they are stuck in countries like India that are not flying international flights?
