I’m currently working at a series A tech startup. Joined about a year ago as a SWE expecting to gain more crazy experience then I would in big companies. It was definitely worth it, since we launched a whole new product within a short amount of time and I was a big part of it. I worked and learned hard (learned 3 new languages and nailed my job + helped others), shipped a lot of code, improved designs and business logics, and brought some new good habits for the team. Fortunately, my boss speaks highly of me and wants me to lead a team very soon. Everything is great but there are some external factors that I couldn’t ignore.

First is company growth. Early stage startups have more deadly factors of failure than large companies. As an employee, I am not confident that keeping our status quo will lead us to hyper growth in coming years under current organizational productivity. I knew that startup is a risk, but it worries me that it will be realized (not within few years tho - money is not the problem now). I don’t have the power to change things at an organizational level (already suggested some actionable changes to my boss and was told it wouldn’t be easy due to politics/ or should I say conflict of interest)

Second is VISA. Straight to the point, I’d want green card ASAP in order to give myself new opportunities. Given this uncertainty, it seems to me that moving to a large and stable company is lucrative. I haven’t started my PERM yet. Though I do feel like gaining some managing experience would be helpful before I leave.

Third is pay. I don’t have problems living with my pay now but who wouldn’t want higher TC if new environment is as good or better than before?

My colleagues are hard working and we have a good team. The problem is the things that I do not have control of.

Would appreciate any suggestions or shareable experience.
