Is the WLB and PSC culture at Meta as bad as Blind makes it to be?

Feb 24 29 Comments

When I read Glassdoor reviews of Meta/Facebook, I see mostly positive reviews, including Meta being in the top 10 places to work for many years straight. The company reviews occasionally mention WLB but its rarely a headline.

On Blind I keep reading how terrible WLB is at Meta and how the PSC culture can drive people to work insane hours and cut corners.

I know the irony of asking this question on Blind, but could anyone shed a little light into how the WLB really is and how the PSC culture influences the WLB? #facebook #meta #wlb #psc

    • @BpSD35 - it seems odd that infra would have better WLB but more churn. I would imagine the teams with the worst churn would have the worst WLB

    • That just some from experience. I guess it depends on your on call tolerance. Also my mentors have mentioned if you really want be a staff or higher level it’s easier with infra where there is tremendous impact across many teams.

Maybe not, but working on products that threaten democracy and cause widespread mental health issues is pervasive

I think the answer is always it’s team dependent. I have lots of friends in Meta and so far all I heard are good things, good WLB, great pay, great food, etc.

There is no work life balance when you are paid for performance and impact. PSC rating is the only input for comp increase. So everything is optimized for PSC.

Assuming all your peers are performing at the same level, whoever spends more hours will end up doing more work/ impact. And whoever ends up doing more will end up ahead when stack ranked.

In meta the top performers gets paid a lot. ( refreshers of 200k more) So there is fierce competition to get there. In companies like microsoft this translates to a very small about (say 20k) so people are happy to be average.

My reports are fairly senior - they all got 800-1M annual stock refreshers. They are a mix of managers and ICs, and all work 35 to 45 hours a week. Ultimately it depends on your personal preference and peer group, so varies a lot. Blind is full of people who have heard third hand shit and make themselves sound like authorities.
