I had my portfolio review last week for a senior interaction designer role at Google.
Got an update from the recruiter that the feedback was positive and that I’m proceeding to the next step in the process - team matching.

Surprised team matching is happening before on-site interviews.. is this normal? Are they perhaps trying to find a team first cos they expect fewer matches or cos maybe I was borderline?

Interviewed by Google on 22nd February, its portfolio presentation with Designer till now no feedback.

How long it will take to hear back from Google?

Also for me it's hard to judge the expression of the interviewer. Any suggestions?

I believe it's still a mix on how they approach candidates. I went through team matching process first myself, talking with hiring managers. This front loaded the waiting time that people normally may face if they go through the process with HC first. It took me about 2-3 months finding the team I liked.
I prefer this method as it allowed me to know what position/role/team I was applying for - where I was able to make any presentation adjustments and set expectations accordingly.

This is common. Something similar happened with me too - I’m a UXR though. Often times, a stronger team match could work in your favour when heading to the hiring committee

I was surprised to be rejected by Google a while back, considering a designer there had my work in their portfolio, claiming they did it! 😅

This is the same process I went through. I think this is better because you’ll know if going through an on-site is worth it or not. The main downside if you’re actively interviewing with other companies with faster timelines, it may put Google out of the running like it did for me. It was ok for me though, because Google was trying to down level me anyway while all of my other offers were at the appropriate level
