Obama’s campaign used the same approach to harvest the fb user data, they had an app sending your friends’ data to them upon downloading and using their app, apparently facebook was aware and said something like “we’re on the same side”.

I googled a bit and this seems to check out, so not another fox news crap. If this is true, ain’t karma a bitch? Stupid snowflakes screwed over the rednecks and years later got fucked by the same facebook dildo.

Most republicans may be stupid rednecks, but at least they’re not such hypocrites, are they?

    I'm no Obama supporter, but there was a big difference.

    If i understand correctly, Obama's campaign used the data to model election results and focus campaigning on the most important areas.

    Trumps campaign used the data to test variations of fake news stories to influence trump voters to show up, and Democrats to not show up.

  • Because Cambridge Analytica is based outside the US. I mean even UK is freaking out so it's not a Trump only bias. And really, it's a foreign influence to our election process. Plus it seems like they are interested in spreading complete lies, and its CEO is caught on tape admitting it. So there's no plausible deniability that they are not doing it.

    • Why do people keep conflating the Russia investigation with some Trump outcome? If they find he did something (and he certainly acts guilty enough), maybe that will happen. But that’s tangential to the matter of Russian interference in our election (not to mention in our country more generally).

      Then again, after today’s news, it’s looking a lot like the end is near for Trump. They now have a direct connection between Trump’s campaign and a GRU agent involved in the DNC hack. Even if Trump maintains plausible deniability, the obstruction case will be impossible to let slide.

      Not sure they stole data exactly. They used the system Facebook set up; same as the Obama campaign. And most fake news is really just advertising; granted with a different tone.

    • Stop lying. You know that none of what you just said is true.

      The whole point of the story is Cambridge Analytica violated Facebook’s terms (and likely some laws) by using a Trojan Horse app to mine data about not only users but their friends, including their private messages. The Obama campaign didn’t do any of that. They had an app *for Obama supporters* which let you bug your friends and invite them to social events related to the campaign. That is a not even remotely comparable to what CA apparently did.

      Fake news is not advertising. It’s literally fake sites impersonating legit news outlets with the sole intent of tricking people into believing things which are not true. It’s not about “tone”, it’s about intent. Advertising is intended to persuade. What we’re talking about is fraud, plain and simple. Same goes for the fake groups (e.g. the fake Tennessee GOP, fake Blacktivist account, fake Anti-Fa accounts, fake “Heart of Texas” group, and the countless others). The Obama campaign never did ANYTHING like any of that, and lying to claim they did, in order to defend anti-democratic criminals, is nothing short of despicable.

      Facebook knew about it, it was against the policy and they did nothing to stop it

      this time the method was more shady but essentially the same principle, getting friends’ data through this bullshit app consent, just the app was different
