I’m now in my 2nd year as a SWE & I’m thinking of joining a series B start up. They’re offering me a good total comp & would allow me to work from other countries which has been a goal of mine for some time. They have very basic benefits like health & PTO but no employee matching 401k or maternity leave.

At what stage should benefits like this be available at a company?

I want to be at new company for 2-3 years. If I wanted to start a family in that time, how do start ups handle that if they don’t offer maternity leave? Will I just have to take leave with no pay?

If anyone w experiences at start ups could help me out would be much appreciated.

    At a startup now. I’d say it’s 50/50 on startups that will offer 401k & parental leave. In my experience you should typically avoid those that don’t.

  • 401k matching isn’t the norm for Series A or B startups. Parental leave is usually there however. Just not the generous time off that FB, Google or other large companies provide though.

    I joined Unsupervised at Series A stage and it had parental leave a standard 50% match up to 6% on a 401k. They also offer things like fully covered health insurance for you and dependents and a contribution to your hsa (should you choose a high deductible health plan). There are assorted other benefits in there as well as a start of a remote stipend a little after we closed series B.
    Unsupervised is the only Series A/B stage startup I’ve worked for though so I can’t tell you if this is the norm or if it is rare.
