How much do people make in chip microarchitecture?

Recently read about Yale Patt and the book titled The Pentium Chronicles. How much do you make in Apple, Intel, AMD, Nvidia or HP? It looks like your work is very important in these companies. I wonder what would be a good way to break into this area? I really want to be a domain expert of something that people care and work 80 hrs/week on it.

late 20s, Bachelor and Master in CS.

    Chip Microarchitecture is actually a broad area rooted in Comp Architecture

    The income is comparable to SWE numbers published on levels.fyi for the companies. Generally
    (1) ASIC design makes makes around 90%,
    (2) Platform Architecture should be 100% if not more (requires experience)
    (3) Performance Analysis, Workload characterization, Simulation around 100%
    (4) Design Validation around 85% I think (somebody should confirm)

    There is renewed interest in this area from Google/FB/MS/Amazon all trying to create vertically integrated Silicon stacks like Apple. At Google, ML Chip architecture is in demand and folks doing (2) and (3) and performing well promote FAST

      Ah, I did not finish typing the last comment. What I wanted to say is to give an example why comp arch requires more experience to even get started, unlike big data where the tooling is so great for many corporates that almost everyone can get started in those areas

    Best way to break in is to get a formal education. There is no need to do this h less you are really interested. And no the pay is not higher.
