Looking for perspective from people with major health issue in the US (e.x. diabetes, cancer, anything where you might have unexpected hospitalization or sky high drug cost). Myself I have Crohns, currently in Europe where everything is covered, but am thinking of moving to Bay Area to pursue better opportunity.

In your experience, does good insurance (e.x. FANG level) cancel out horror stories seen on forum like Reddit? Such as insurance not recognizing certain procedure or certain drug? Or have you still had risk of debt, bankrupt etc. even with best insurance?

Hope you understand, I am not looking to start argument. US system is just very different than what I am used to and I am little familiar with it. Thank you.

  • You’d be fine with insurance.

People on Reddit skew younger and poorer, and act like we all become destitute as soon as we catch the flu.

I know several people with Crohn’s, all of whom are doing fine money-wise.

  • I think for the most part FAANG insurance does cancel out such horror stories. You might want to connect to a crohns patient advocacy group to ask questions once you actually have to pick a plan. Most out of pocket maximum for the year is 3-4k for a single - and maybe much less. With FAANG salary you can afford it - just stay “in network”.

If you have insurance with your employer, then the US is fucking fantastic for health care. High quality care and tech and no long waits to be seen.

With a decent employer sponsored insurance, you’ll be fine. I’ve lived in places with “socialist” healthcare models and they’re not that good for folks with conditions that require ongoing attention. The US healthcare model might be “paid” - but it’s better than free low quality healthcare with extended wait times.
