Why is blind so bearish about snowflake?

Oct 1, 2021 40 Comments

Most posts about snowflake show a negative sentiment on blind wrt future growth potential. Anyone care to weigh in why? Ofcourse its trading at a high revenue multiple - any reasons apart from that?
Am planning to start interviewing around. Not sure if snowflake is good/bad/great.

  • I would guess most people in here are jealous because they think everyone is an instant multi millionaire.

Get angry, tear others down type of thing.

Ultimately, we have the best cloud native architecture in the world. Join now and do the best you can or complain about how much money you lost not joining a year from now.

  • Hmm. SF has a good product with battle tested leadership in a hot, high TAM arena. They have some significant vulnerabilities however ranging from locked-in, proprietary solutions to rigid technical capabilities (a feature for simplicity, a bug otherwise) and leadership that's made bona fide enemies of the clouds. All those vulnerabilities have upside too fwiw, but time will tell how the market perceives them.

DB is philosophically light-years apart, which again has trade-off, but honestly and somewhat objectively, since this is anonymous, DB has a better, but harder path long term.

    • @vjwnzn I can unload billions of rows out of snowflake to parquet in seconds or minutes, costing just a few dollars. It’s not costly to move the data- unless you also move it outside of the cloud region you’re in. If its a one-way unload the cost will likely be negligible

@data4u - what processing engine do you use with delta lake? You still need one somewhere - whether its snowflake, databricks, spark, synapse, redshift, athena, etc. delta lake doesnt serve on its own - gotta add compute

    • The point isn’t you need a compute: the point is that if it is already in open formats; there is a very high likelihood that your new vendor or your new stack will have an inherent support for that open format.

Because the word "snowflake" reminds them of the right-wing derogatory term used to describe people they dislike.
