Grab Potential

Uber is close to IPO and looking around I see Grab with a lot of potential I.e with their foray into payments space. Looks like they might have potential to go 3-4x in next 3-4 yrs. Going to think about interviewing there. Am I missing something about them? TC: 350k (E5)

Which office, SG or SEA?

Seattle

You are not missing anything. It is a very good opportunity.

Grab is currently valued at 14 bn. 3-4x would be 42-56 bn. That’s like half of Uber being in a market far smaller than a market Uber is at. I’m doubtful.

Amazon yWsJ24 Apr 14, 2019

I'm guessing his comment about the payments space went over your head. Grab and Uber are not entirely in the same business. And the market Grab is in is growing much faster.

I could be wrong but SE Asia won’t be anything close to NA, LatAm and EU together where Uber has a lead. How much valuation would you like to add to its payment arm?

Gotta grab that opportunity, amirite

What does Uber close to IPO have to do with anything

TC estimates would be more precise

Facebook QhBl71 OP Apr 14, 2019

Just that Uber is not going to give the 3-4x boost. Heard grab pays decently well and with the boost, that would be a big bump

Interviewed at Grab, got an offer. But I wouldn’t leave FB for Grab unless either I already can enjoy FI or I don’t care about money.

Facebook QhBl71 OP Apr 14, 2019

Did you take it? FB is stressing me out with low WLB and it’s getting political. I do not see myself getting to M2 level easily (that’s roughly the pay where I want to be at)

What's the M2 level salary at FB? Is it the E7 level?

Microsoft 8k7hjh Apr 14, 2019

Are willing to take a liquid paycut for that possibility?

Facebook QhBl71 OP Apr 14, 2019

Risk vs. reward. Got to do it at some point

Groupon sleepy Apr 14, 2019

You can read the part related to Grab in this - https://techcrunch.com/2019/04/11/uber-global-exits-billions/

Facebook QhBl71 OP Apr 14, 2019

But the valuation will keep increasing until it probably hits 20 or 25b but might pause after that

From the article: Indeed, the Uber filing notes a clause in the deal that would allow the U.S. firm to sell “all or a portion of its investment back to Grab for cash” if the company hasn’t gone public by March 25, 2023, five years after the deal.

SE Asia is pretty poor. How do people expect incomes to rise? Is it going to be developing white collar industries?

Facebook QhBl71 OP Apr 14, 2019

Not really but it is about usage. Wechat payment sky rocketed as folks changed the way they exchange money. Similarly, imagine if Grab allows you to have a card to pay for all Grab related services. Instead of using cash every time, one can use the card

Grab 321497 Apr 14, 2019

Where did you get the idea that Grab is close to IPO? 😆

Facebook QhBl71 OP Apr 14, 2019

Not close but in next 3-4 yrs. I don’t think I have said anywhere that they are close to IPO. Being at Grab, how do you feel?

Grab 321497 Apr 14, 2019

You said it in your main post, but i know what you mean. The culture is toxic and highly political. I’ll be leaving next month. It really depends on a team you join. Overall, it’s a huge mess. It’s growing too fast and many things are out of control. I wouldn’t leave Facebook for Grab for sure.
