Why is a Google Anti-Remote?

Sep 10, 2021 15 Comments

I had a successful team match with Google but it was for Mountain View and I’m in Seattle. I told them I wasn’t willing to move even before they connected me with this team.

So the recruiter screwed up. But why don’t they allow remote work? I thought Google was supposed to be innovative with offices and work, but this seems really inflexible. And I see that they have higher-ups who are allowed to work remotely from other countries… but Senior SWEs apparently can’t work remote. This seems dumb.

I’m blacklisting Google until they fix their policies. I have plenty of good options that have embraced remote work regardless of pandemic status.

Upper management owns Bay Area rental real estate. Forcing workers to stay local to create shortage and drive up rents is just common sense.

Big companies don’t like to take big risks. They and all other successful companies were built non-remote. It took a long time for Google to become super successful and disseminate their innovative work culture across the world.

We’ll need to wait for a new extremely successful remote company before being able to convince everyone its possible and worth it.

    • I really don’t get the inconsistency with allowing some managers to be remote but forcing ICs to be local. I know someone there in MTV whose boss works from the east coast. Very weird IMO. And plus after 1.5 years of successful remote work, why this obsession to get everyone back?

Given that Google’s such a big company, I think they are trying to assess this team by team. Some products require more “collaboration” than others.

TrueCar’s a tiny company but even we are seeing the need to at least have some in person time when spinning up new projects or planning something big. But no one wants to work here so we are giving in to remote and trying to make it work. I think for Google, they have the luxury of doing whatever they want. Wouldn’t be surprised if they are actually testing out a variety of hypothesis right now.
