Working another software engineering job at Google?

Jul 14, 2021 6 Comments

Can someone at Google tell me what it says in their terms and conditions on whether or not they can work another full time swe job? I know at some companies the contract says you must dedicate all working hours to them. Is there a clause or no compete agreement in googles contract?

I’m srsly thinking about taking two full time swe jobs (because money) since Google is chill and the other company is chill too. (Don’t have Google offer yet, currently team matching but other company’s offer is exploding)

There's an element of IP ownership. I believe you have to get every external project you're going to work on approved by Google or else they can assert ownership. This may not be enforceable in all states and as long as you aren't doing it on company time (hard to define as a full-time employee) or hardware you should in theory be fine.

The reality of this fantasy though is if they found out you would just be fired. The other reality is it will take you years of ramping up to be productive enough that you could get by with working part time at Google while maintaining a minimum rating

You're employed at will so they can fire you for anything. You won't be producing much work so that will be a good reason to fire you as well.

A concrete reason is you're working on a software project you haven't disclosed to the company. As I mentioned there's a process for getting these approved.

Well you’d probably work hard enough at Google to not be fired. You don’t care if they other place fires you.
