i am recent grad from college working as an actuarial analyst, how do i go into SWE? have no idea where to start or what to prepare for. Can someone break down what’s needed for applications, any resources to prepare for the job? I have little coding experience that too mostly in sql and sas. Took a class for C++ in college and that was my favorite class out of all, nailed the class so feel like SWE might be a good field for me. majored in mathematics so don’t know if i’ll need some CS certification on my resume.
Why do you want to go into SWE?
actuarial exam load is very heavy, i have lost 90% of my life studying for them and not even half way through. i can pass them easily but have to put in a lot of time, to the extent where i don’t leave home for weeks. swe was always something i was interested in but too scared to attempt before college, was intimidating because lots of smart people in the field and never thought i would be able to make it. but i guess now i’m at a spot where i realize might as well do something that piques my interest and not be scared
This sounds like the parable of a man who swam halfway to an island, got tired, then turned to swim back. I don’t think you’ll study less trying to break into tech if that’s your motivation.
I was in a similar situation to you, but I was only two exams in when I decided to make the transition as a math major. I definitely don’t regret it since actuarial work seemed super boring and studying for the exams was a pain in the ass. It’s not too late for you to switch if you really don’t like the work.
