after 6 years of SWE experience, being promoted to Engineering manager

Opportunity to become manager at Cisco Systems for a team delivering an important revamp to a well known product. Well known name sround my org at this point and manager is impressed at what i have delivered and how ive handled short timelines. No such thing as work life balance at the trams ive been at in Cisco. Opportunity to make a huge impact and increase market share for a product. TC: 160, 127k base, 15% bonus, 55k stoke over 4 years Should i ride the wave and work hard to deliver; something strong i can put on my resume.

Brilliant! You know what to do.

Not worth it reflected by TC.

First only become an EM because that’s where you see yourself professionally. It’s a career change. Next, do it for a few years then jump to G/FB as a E5 or 6. In 3 years you could be at 3x comp

I don’t see myself going down the Tech Lead/Principle Engineer route. Wanted to get 7-8 years experience as swe, the become manager. I want to ascend in management to Director role and eventually VP of Engineering. I am passionate hardworking and a people’s person

Cisco NaPB83 OP Dec 13, 2019

Also, I’m passionate about development, strong technical base, but work too hard and burn out a little more often...

How is your g10 base that low? Non Bay Area??

Cisco NaPB83 OP Dec 13, 2019

In Bay Area, got promoted to 10 this year

Cisco ops-tranny Dec 13, 2019

Okay just FYI G6 are coming in at 126k (62 - the hourly version).. you should demand at least 158k base if they need you this much and you are that good (25% max VP approval raise)

Cisco NaPB83 OP Dec 13, 2019

I am in the Bay Area... they hired me as an 8 in 2016 and in the org I was in, there was a lot of competition for promotions and raises... everyone works real hard

Cisco ops-tranny Dec 13, 2019

Switch teams dude you have 2 young kids... you can easily work 15 hrs a week at Cisco with that TC and spend more time on more important things

Cisco eagle15 Dec 13, 2019

Do u know what Engineering Manager really is? In our team EM is a cross between program manager and release manager. U sure want to be that instead of swe?

Google YWzz63 Dec 13, 2019

EM at Google can code 20-30% no problem. You can make what you want from it. Im 10% dev, 30% tpm, 30% pm, and rest people issues and meetings

You must have a small team.

While becoming SDM you must demand a reset in pay or else it will very sad to see you getting g6 and g8 SWE under you with more pay then you! New g6s will start at 127k base and new g8s will demand anything betn 135-150k base.

Cisco NaPB83 OP Dec 16, 2019

Problem is... it’s a sad group when it comes for pay... if they find a candidate asking for a higher salary, they pass on him/her.

Cisco NaPB83 OP Dec 16, 2019

I’m definitely going to bring this up... wondering if I can go to HR directly
