I keep hearing that Apple Google Nvidia and others in the valley don't think too highly of Intel employees. Can someone on this forum comment about why that might be?

  • Usually good ppl leave intel within 3 years. Most of people above Grade 7 are just lazy old and incompetent. Now if you're talking about Intel Big Core CPU team in Israel that's a totally different story. The group saving the day for Intel and pays for all other shit groups

Fair Enough.... I don't care that he didn't like it. there's plenty not to like. I'm glad he found what he's looking for. But don't hate the game, learn to play it. Keep your skills up to date. Study. Interview. Know your worth. It's so easy to move jobs within Intel and gain skills in all sorts of new areas. I actually agree with most of everything you've said above....except about Lattner. Perhaps it's a reflection of where within Intel we work. I work in a manufacturing development role.

hugh Intel manufacturing and semiconductor seems to be a microcosm of excellence within the company. Indeed I hope it stays that way.

It's true GoodMgr. It's well-known that intel salaries are low so we don't attract the best, hell we barely attract mediocre. The "low hiring bar" and low pay at intel is well-known throughout tech and especially in The SF Bay. If you are a SW Eng at intel it's practically a career liability- you are viewed with distrust by other companies from the start. Also we, unlike Google/NVIDIA/Facebook/Amazon/Apple have aggressively lowered the bar to accommodate diversity. The manner in which intel has pursued diversity is a total turn-off to many top job candidates. Tying diversity hires to managers bonuses was a huge mistake, and I doubt that other tech firms do this. While every company wants a diverse workforce, no company will drastically lower the bar to foster diversity the way intel has done. The only people we successfully recruit are those who could not get hired elsewhere.

Because the people that normally stay at the same place for decades are often those that can't compete for jobs elsewhere. Lifers drag tech companies down and slow innovation. They prefer "this is how we've always done things" to new ideas. Which may be ok in some areas of silicon fab, but they also face new challenges that need fresh ideas.
