Google TC 350K, heavy on stock
Slack TC 370K
6 YOE

WLB and perks seem relatively good at both. Both have refreshers. Stock is liquid either way. Slack is more responsibility / scope due to level and slightly more TC which seems good for my career, but meh on Slack's future and worried about their engineering quality.

Given the WFH era we’re in right now, starting at L4 could be a huge benefit.

I onboarded remotely as an L5 at not-G this year and it’s been rough. So many things are difficult to pick up for the broader projects I’ve done on that I somewhat envy my L4 teammates for having a lane to learn in. (no ability to meet ppl as often means tribal knowledge is just hard to find)

    • I’m having the same issues right now. I definitely second that. The expectations to really own a platform and unable to interact with stakeholders, engineers, pms, architects is a hugely underrated challenge.

Had an offer from both and I chose Slack. Best decision by far. People who keep on saying MSFT teams will win clearly never sold a damn thing in their lives let alone enterprise software. Don’t listen to them. Slack is great, esp if you’re given a higher role. Google 2020 is not the same as Google of 2010.

I don't see the ability to rest and best as a bad thing. WLB is important. What about engineering practices at Slack? Do you feel like people make the corret long term engineering choices? Or do they sacrifice code quality for speed

    • "hence good luck trying to get under performers off your team out"

If the rest of Slack is as toxic as this person, I'd run far, far away

  • Slack stock is 27... even if it grows to 50$ you will have double the package

Four years? If anything, I'd re-interview after 1 unless I'm seeing significant personal and company growth. And even then, 1 is a long time to spend at a subpar place. But also a long time to spend in a subpar role...

Google will still be there in a couple of years.
You will then try and clear L5

  • How did you get $350k as G L4? Thought it only goes up to $300k
