Whats up guys. Im joining Amazon at the SDE1 lvl though I’ll have had a 2 years of experience by the time I start. From what i can tell SDE1 seems to mostly be new grads and new grad equivalents and I want to move up quickly. What exactly will Amazon be looking for to make that jump? YOE: 2 Current TC: 98k Future Amazon TC: 148k
Is that for Seattle? That is mid of the L4 band, not what I would expect from an external L4 hire. You should negotiate more if you still can. Amazon is looking for you to perform at the next level. So look at the job matrix and do 80% of the L5 requirements and hopefully you should be promoted within a year. Good luck
Thanks for the advice. Where exactly would I find the L5 reqs after I join?
Although it is around the middle of the band, it is a narrow band, so you are not that far in absolute terms from the top of the band. Don’t let the numbers bother you, in case they are. You have a good pay bump, congratulations!
I would focus on your role and how to perform. You are focused on promotion and haven’t even started yet
Have a candid conversation with your manager when you joined. You were offered L4 likely because the loop noted that you did not raise the bar in several areas. My guess is It has to do with a few LPs. Ask humbly if your manager can share what your growth ideas could be, and work with him or her on addressing these gaps.
Thanks for the sound advice!
Not sure about other orgs, but in AWS there're some pretty binary decision: 1. "not do well enough on systems design" = SDE1 regardless of how you do in other interviews. 2. "Fail LPs (especially earns trust)" = No hire. A more subjective one is that you won't get SDE2 if most of your LP examples include small scope projects with no distributed systems component. Look at the leveling guidelines when you join for more details. "Earns Trust" may not be called out explicitly but is super important for promotion

Your TC for 2 YoE is low... But you should be able to jump soon. They'll be looking for you to perform well and ramp up faster than a new grad.
When I applied it was like 1.5 yrs but I see ur point
