amazon promotions - apply internally for one level up

I am currently joining as sr. PM -T at amazon. I was down levelled during interview. Can i apply for higher level role internally after 6 months? does this happen often?

If you demonstrate next level performance in the role and your manager + org agree that this is the case, you can be relevelled up within the first six months. You really need to knock it out of the park for this to happen and make sure you have an ongoing two-way conversation about expectations with your manager throughout. After that the only path up is through promo. Moves between teams are always at the same level.

Also, what mdhwgqiq said. Principal PM-Ts are like hens’ teeth. Plenty of great Snr PM-Ts in here with 20+ yoe

I'm sde1 with 3.5 YOE and I think I'm downleveled. How to communicate with my manager for level up within the first 6 months? Just asking for it?Is it really make sense?I mean have you ever seen this happened in Amazon?

No, the bar for principal PMT is very different. And your compensation will not adjust that much.

I have 15+ years exp. what would be general timeline to get promoted?

Sounds like you’re too focused on something so insignificant that you didn’t bother reading the replies to you.

I understand it’s difficult to switch to higher role. I was asking about general promo timeline on average.

Lol yeah you could potentially get an off cycle promotion during a transfer. I've been on a few TTs supporting it. The likelyhood of getting all the approvals and making the justification is slim to none at your level. Transfer after a promo, other than that yeah it's possible but highly improbable.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Can I switch from IC to manager role in L6 in 6 months? I have been people manager for 5+ years now but choosing IC since it’s amazon.

This is doable. Usually people are groomed and slowly given 1 or 2 people to lead before the promo to manager. Your previous experience is great and I don't mean to downplay it but you're an IC. You'll have to earn the manager role regardless of your previous experience. Your precious experience should make the switch easier, but if your manager agrees you'll be an IC with a direct report or 2 for a quarter or longer before the promo. Dont get discouraged, just be aware of this possibility.

Thank you much. This is helpful context. I certainly do not want to jump ahead soon but want be aware of possibilities.
