    Just pull up the official crime rates for states and compare.
    NYC is safe - been living here for years. As for crime - that exists everywhere. If you are out and about in shady areas past midnight, sure there is high risk.
    Same for SF or seattle.

      Seattle has shady areas but please don’t compare Seattle to New York. New irk is way bigger and way more crime.

      Agree about about your under reporting comment. Percentage wise it may be similar in other metros but would you feel safe that a city a has 10 million criminal incidents per year versus a smaller city which has 1 million crimes per year (under reporting percentage being the same).

      Many people I know have had bad experience in New York. Like people trying to mug or trick or pick pocket.

      Not saying that other metros don’t have crime but the image of New York in media is too glorified for why it is. Shitty transit system with poop and pee everywhere. Crumbling infrastructure. Your can argue that other cities don’t even have a public transit to poop and pee on and that would be a reasonable argument.

    i was in NY for a weekend last year. A distressed mentally unstable guy who was talking to himself sat next to me and then randomly pulled a knife out on me on the metro. I made sure to not react and calmly got up and walked away and thank goodness nothing happened.
