I think the point everyone is missing is that these layoff decisions are not just to save some cash in the short term. And your salary is not the only expense for the company - there is so much more like you insurance, 401k match, you equipment, office space, etc. which add up to a lot more than your salary.

Its not like the C suite loves the negative PR and reputation hit that comes with layoffs, these decisions are mostly taken because it's inevitable.

And keep in mind that most of these CEOs are empire builders ( no one wants to run a smaller company). So having 25% less employees is not great for their ego either and is done to ensure they have a much bigger company in the future.

Yup, the reason we are not taking a pay cut is because we are not short of money in the near term, which is what pay cut addresses. It’s about strategic shift in resources for the next 2-3 years.

Not to mention if a whole engineering org takes a "voluntary" paycut, the best engineers start looking elsewhere. Pretty soon you're out your top 10% of engineers.

I love how non-Uber employees are such experts with internal discussions and leadership motives. This was discussed at AH. It doesn't make sense to keep people that have seen their day to day tasks evaporate. No amount of paycut or furlough would fix that. There's no way to know when the rides side of the business is going to return to normal IF ever.
There's an indefinite hiring freeze, a paycut or furlough wouldnt just make work appear for recruiters and support staff.
I could go on and on with the list of jobs and projects cut but you get the idea. I feel our leadership including Dara have done a good job. Our severance package is very generous, everyone laid off is keeping their laptops and phones, 10 weeks pay + 2 weeks for every year + COBRA paid for.

I'm unfamiliar with Intel's severance package but I'd be curious.

      Found Dara’s account.

Lol seriously though, I really want Uber to succeed, and I believe in the vision of the company. They need to get better leaders though, I can’t believe it’s more or less the same as when Travis was CEO, minus the misogynistic culture (glad he is gone for sure)

“Some” managers offering pay cuts is not all. I guarantee if they cut all managers salaries by 15% to save an employee that is an underperformed, you’ll have mass attrition. It isn’t guaranteed that all the golden superstars would be saved, if they were really superstars, they wouldn’t be part of the chosen ones to get layers off.
