Kids, especially freshers from India, a word of advice for you all: NEVER join DE Shaw. Doesn't matter what role, what compensation; just avoid. Maybe, keep it just above WITCH companies if you at all want to.

Reason: There's a happy world out there. You don't have to stress yourself up and constantly push yourself to the limits for the company that doesn't care about you a single bit. Take leaves, get a vacation, live your life. Don't trust their management ever. Nobody really cares about you. The managers are always looking to save their own a*ses. Stay out. Be happy!

From a former employee, who went into depression after being there for only a year. Simply lost a whole year for not having the guts to resign on Day 1.

@OP Why? Any more details would be better as I had imagined DE Shaw to be a good hedge fund.

It was overall a pathetic experience for me, especially after I announced my resignation. The last two months (notice period) were torture to say the least. For my case, they even "threatened" to "not give me resignation approval" if I don't deliver within time.

I still gave them the best feedback during exit interviews (mostly out of fear of burning bridges). Now, I curse myself for being so naive.

  • Former DE Shaw India employee here, currently at G. I think this post is just OP's personal experience and it's unfair to generalize this across the firm. I had good managers and okayish work while at Shaw. Comp and perks were top of the line but tech stack was slightly dated. I wouldn't recommend a fresher join DE Shaw **if they have offers from faang or a good startup**.. but if that's not the case, it's a perfectly fine place to be imo. Just my 2 cents

Amazon is easily the best choice but this could depend on the project/team as well. Amazon work is quite good and good amount of ownership is generally given. If you have some specific tech preference you might want to setup calls with hiring manager/TL to better understand your role

The thing is college freshers especially in IIT are attracted by the huge fat salaries offered by hedge funds and quant funds. Now when people pay you so much just as a fresher there is a reason. They will extract 2x work from you but generally freshers dont take all this seriously and realize it later. Even in US Jane street kills the soul in you just like any IB/Consult job. DE Shaw is the most stupid option to take as they don’t even pay high salaries. I mean you can take any random quant firm and it will whoop DE Shaws salary.
If you have decided to sell your soul for money be smart as a fellow IITian to at least find the highest bidder.
    Welcome to retirement @Google op.

  • Sounds like most companies that leverages India as cheaper location. They just want the work that needs to be done and don’t really feel like paying for it.

Another bait is L1 used by companies to have people sign 2-3 years bond (yup, essentially You and your family is on the hook).

  • I also spent two years of my life in DEShaw. I stayed mainly because I wanted to apply for ISB and having a company like DEShaw was a plus. Once I realized the staying in tech was better than going for MBA, I moved out of the firm. Felt as if I wasted two years of my life there. Learned a lot about excel though :P

The worst part about being in DEShaw is that you are made to feel second class to US employees. I never had that feeling in any other US tech firm. (Amazon, Microsoft and Expedia)

    • Either Amazon or Microsoft is fine. I might prefer Amazon for a fresher because:
      1. You get to work mostly on widely used technologies such as Java, AWS etc
      2. Amazon grinds you a lot and pushes you to your upper limit. As a fresher this could be a great learning experience. WLB should be a priority may be after 5 years down the line
