DoorDash lost a total of $149 million in 2020, a company that is spending every last dollar to expand. Yet Uber lost 5 billion so far this year, and Lyft at 1 or 2 billion as well.

Does anyone find this incredible? Is DoorDash really figuring out how to make money from this business (149 million sounds like a lot, but compare that to 5 BILLION). They are leading the market and still expanding. Is Uber and Lyft really mismanaged?

    • Some years ago when I got a tour from my friend, D was talking about how they spend way too much money on prototyping hardware. Like they’re not careful, over spending more than they need to to test something out. I bet that is a lot of the expenditures.

At the time of my tour, what they had was pretty slick to my inexperienced eye. I can’t speak to where they are now.

Bruh, we brought postmates for like 2.7b do some research before posting misleading titles like this. Also, we're more than just food delivery. Also, we are in over 600 cities around the globe. Also, we have an actual R&D division (ATG) whereas doordash doesn't invest in the future.

Uber team here!! But DD is laser focus and in the US they kicked our ass stealing us CP with much less spending. But that’s what happens when you can focus on one market only.

  • I don’t get the marketshare numbers... doordash made ~1.9 billion in revenue for all of 9 months and Uber eats did this alone in last quarter and how does doordash have double the marketshare as Uber eats.?

Q3 GB is 7.5B for DD and 8.5 for UberEats. DD has a much lower take rate though at 11% vs. UberEats 17%. That’s why DD revenue is much lower. That said, given they are profitable even with this low take rate(mainly driven by that they have 2/3 of that UberEats’ restaurant commission), it means they are very efficiently and well run company.

Not sure about Lyft, but Uber has a global presence in over 600+ cities, along with ATG, Frieght, Rideshare and Eats. With a global presence comes with more cost for ops and local marketing. Uber has been trying to centralize those two things, along with reducing engineering bloat
