What’s the prospect there? Teams still expanding? Is google still making investment or just letting it lose out?

They are building two blocks accross from you and soon they will poach all your competent co-workers :) They will also make Mercer traffic double the fun.

Joke aside, I think they have a harder time competing with AWS than MSFT. The latter has an enterprise customer base they can convert, I don't know what Google's strategy is. If they want to win on price, we are doing to see a price war like never before.

Well, AWS has been very aggressive in lowering the prices while continuing to push out new services like GPU, AI/ML ready AMIs. Google is barely playing the catch up game in terms of new services. I don’t think they have an edge in the enterprise or startup space either.

Hmm. It depends. At least for product launches, there are gatekeepers outside the team with permission to prevent the launch. E.g. the security team is a different org and can (will) definitely stop you from launching with a poorly baked security model.

Yup SRE and security team can block the launch.

  • Google is the sleeping giant in cloud segment. It will catch up with AWS soon.

I don’t think Google has the enterprise blood in it. Always play catchup. Let it be Android, Cloud, assistant etc

    • That is why I say a few years. By a few I mean 5 to 10 years.

AWS definitely is great. But also remember that switching cost from one cloud provider to another is not that expensive. A lot of company use AWS and Azure at the same time.

It is not only about the underlying technology, Google can potentially offer something that is not available in AWS and may take many many years for AWS to build.

Yes AWS has a lot of features, but a lot of them is just putting open source code in the cloud. It will take time for people to catch up, but not much time.

@Gbigtuj I think you’re missing a few important points here. Building cloud agnostic, so your product will work on all providers means that you can only build with the least common denominator. As AWS keeps rolling out shitloads of new features it’s difficult for companies to include GCP in their cloud agnostic product. Azure has done a better job keeping pace.

It will be difficult for GCP to offer something new that couldn’t be delivered by AWS very quickly. To build something like that it would need to be some sort of primitive which as far as we’re aware, have already been built. Of course maybe there’s something no ones thought of yet but like I said it would be difficult not impossible.

The final thing is GCPs customer service blows. There are some very big spenders who have migrated away from GCP with the main initial reason being that they weren’t getting good support from google. This is just mind blowing to me as these are customers paying enough that you should build a team of 50+ just to support.
