Considering big tech and coporate reliance on temporary foreign workers, will Trump really carry out the ban of OPT and H1-B?

Also studies show that banning OPT will actually cause economic damage in the long run. Though Trump probably doesn’t care because he is just using the economic downfall as an excuse to exercise xenophobia. And he never cares about science and research, as we can see by the way he has dealt with the virus.

Standard application of stereotypes. One dude dates someone for GC, and suddenly assume everyone does that.

People are just people guys, and you can expect all kind of negative behaviors given you look at enough numbers. Doesn’t matter what community or race they belong to.

He will announce something cosmetic like closing consular processing of new visas for folks outside US for 60 days, but will stop short of banning change of status applications for folks within the US. For folks currently within the US who are applying for OPT, H1-B etc should be fine. This is exactly what he did in the first EO for GC.

He will parade it as "No more foreigners" to appease his base. This way, tech economy also will not take a major incremental hit and he will also score brownie points within his own base. I am no fan of that guy, but he is a smarter politician than most guys give him credit for.

That’s a good point actually. Never thought about that. Being a tech worker, I guess I was just thinking about my industry and my position. Thanks for that input.

Americans are not competing with low skilled immigrants for the jobs they are doing. And if they are, they are low skilled —- who cares

Farmers have a really tough time finding labor when the supply of migrants is affected. Americans don’t last long and quit easily. Supply and demand determines the right level of immigration if the communist trump would let it

  • Presidents usually have a very broad remit wrt immigration. He could very well do that, even if it’s illegal. Congress isn’t very likely to challenge him in these circumstances and the Supreme Court will tilt towards him very likely on this issue. Only the corporate lobbyists can prevent this.

While this is true, Presidents also have an obligation to make sure the economies they are trying to save dont go in free fall. I don't see that obligation being given much thought in this Presidency, to put it very lightly.

  • Yes he will try.
You must understand that for the Trump administration immigration is the piñata they hit when they are in trouble. The 2 month greencard ban was passed right after internal Republican polling came out showing Trump lagging behind Biden by double digits. It was an attempt to engage in some good old fashioned xenophobia/racism to get his polling up (it is still down).
So will he try banning OPT and H1B? Yes, as his polling is only going to continue to drop due to his mismanagement of the epidemic he is going to get bolder with his far right agenda to gin up some support.

The silver lining? He will try but fail, the Republicans are in the pocket of business leaders who will never let such a thing pass thru a republican administration because it hurts them.

True. I don’t think he is allowed to ban visa applications from aliens already in the US. Also if he were to ban OPT and H1-B that would disrupt big businesses a lot and will force them to replace their employees.
