I've seen several posts where most Indian immigrants on work visa (waiting in GC queue) argue with the fact that they pay thousands of dollars in taxes and yet get nothing in return.

How is it different in your home country and what does an Indian citizen get back for paying taxes? Could you provide specific facilities the Indian government provides for paying taxes which are not available to you in the US despite paying taxes? Or is it just a dummy fact you insert along with other facts?

    • @Dropbox - "You have no right to representation, the original argument for “no taxation without representation” applied to British citizens in a British colony, they obviously had the right to representation as they were British."

If it was that "obvious" then why did they have to go to war, smart guy?

zfDa75 and banjara, those who call Congress people and ask them to pass S386 or BBB, say they have rights as constituents to do so.
Are you saying that they don't?

Have you heard of IITs? They’re better than Stanfords at 1/100th the price. That’s one example of tax payers money. US is stupid to make immigration harder for those earning $200k+ a year. It’s better to make it super easy and flexible for them to switch jobs and start companies. It’ll pay huge dividends in long term. Unfortunately politics isn’t in the best interest of the country.

I love how nationalism is universal at every country. Their universities are of course the best in the world no matter what outsiders say.

Dude, IIT isn’t cheap. It is subsidized with tax payers money in India.

But people are whining about paying taxes here. Studied with Indian tax payers money and not to worried about paying them back.

My only complaint is about charging social security tax from workers on L1 visa. The visa is given only for 5 years and can't be extended beyond that. Social security tax is deducted with the premise that I'll be given the benefits if I contribute for 10 years at least. This doesn't add up.

L1 by definition is intra company transfer for a short project. Sounds unlikely that a transferee would be paid in another country.

B1 isn't appropriate for this purpose. B1 is for business or training not work. Remember there was a whole stink about FB or so, bringing Indians in on B1 to do projects?
      It was L1

"Taxation without representation" was done by Britain at gunpoint. The American colonists had no way out of that deal.

Nobody is forcing you to H1B at gunpoint.
You are welcome to go back to where you came from. There is a long line of those who will gladly grab your spot.

Why are you under the impression that H1B program should benefit you at all costs? It should benefit Americans first and foremost. You are not being taxed nearly enough.

"Free H1bs so they can all start businesses that will help the US economy" must have started out as a joke comment but people use it seriously now.

  • Let me start … US is one of the fairest countries in world when it comes to anything except for it’s anarchic immigration system. They haven’t reformed it for ages . If Indians are living and working here legally and paying taxes like every one else they expect to be treated fairly by the immigration system too. If they have a talent based entry for H1B visa why not implement similar point based system for highly skilled folks. People come here to build their lives as America provides the best opportunities for anyone with talent and after staying here for a long time if they have to stay in a uncertain environment they obviously start to feel bitter about the system they are helping to build. Do you even know how it’s difficult for many families even to take a vacation

Another thing to consider is that lot of work falls out of tech industry and R&D areas

People on PM & business track would have to follow multi national manager route. Fashion designers, chefs, architects, movie directors etc. have to trek an even more difficult path.

    • The real reason for not thing phd by back logged folks is true greed in their nature. They don't want to wait for few years in phd and want to milk high tc from fang. When they realize they are not gonna get gc and can't keep the hard work, they start complaining(randi Rona).
