PIPs at G are a thing and mine was a nightmare. 2 years ago I was retaliation from another colleague and utter neglect from my manager.
My manager threatened that if one of my projects isn't successful I will get an NI rating and be put on a performance plan. Then they left on a 5 day vacation. I delivered on the project. Then they said I need to go on a PIP - and the reasons were such BS - they were more one offs and "top of mind" small mistakes that were sighted as ongoing issues - like forgetting to label 1 doc while all this was happening
One reviewer (retaliated colleague who I worked on the project w/) rated me far below expectations - I hit all my OKR milestones and got the project done, but because I went over their head to their manager they rated me poorly. They also said I stepped on their toes. So basically this person - 3 levels above me - sabotaged my career. My manager wasn't too aware of what I was working on - partially my fault - but also partially because they didnt care about me and were OOO all the time (missed meetings, didnt review my docs...etc) so they didnt stick up for me.
Tried to transfer and the manager blocked my first transfer effort by not supporting me when talking to (what would have been) my new boss.
Here I was hitting my milestones, doing my work, completing projects and all of a sudden I was told I am getting an NI (just a few weeks into the Q) and I was not able to change the score at all - it was decided at that point. Didn't matter that I got great ratings from colleagues.
When I was on my PIP I had to keep my manager in the loop about everything. all emails, meetings...etc. they nit picked every tiny itty bitty little thing. It was the most unhealthy mental state ive been in in my life. not designed to do anything but get you to quit or build up a case against you.
Moral of the story, transfer early and often, there is a ton of politics and ppl can screw you over.
I've never been so mistreated in my life. #pip #hr #ni #google #horribleboss
I had to find a team who will take a chance on me and the process of transferring internally with a NI/PIP on your record was NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE, and demoralizing. luckily I've been on my new team for about a year now and its fantastic. Also, it means that a whole bunch of ppl on your new team know your rating and that is looming above your head - fresh start? doesnt exist.
EDIT: I was fighting to stay at google because its my dream company and ill be dammed if those a holes take it away. I know I am good and deserve better than them. I also didn't want to leave because w/ an NI you cant really come back.
