How does performance evaluation work at FB and Google?

We have it "manager controls all" philosophy for most mid range/low range candidates. For top tier, there is enough evidence of delivery and impact so managers are little cautious.
I am reading a lot of posts from Facebookers about WLB and PIP. Is it as aggressive as amazon? Heck, now I think Amazon is much better. A couple or two similar posts from Googlers who said WLB is team dependent and benefits are not what they used to be.
Given these anecdotes -

1) how true is it?
2) how true is TC data?

You write review for yourself, peers, your manager(goes to skip). Manager writes yours, then assembles it all and presents at calibrations.

I’ve been at these calibrations, pretty fair.

Also saw cases of the team writing bad feedback for the manager and manager disappearing.

PIP is for bottom performers, like everywhere. FB is pretty good at weeding out free riders.

WLB differs from team to team.

    TC is tru.

If you can talk well (to your manager/peers about what you do) but can’t write well, manager’s and peer’s feedback (plus manager rewriting your packet for calibration) will mostly take care of it.
If you also can’t talk well, you have a bigger problem that needs addressing, because being a good engineer is more than just coding.
