You might have already heard games dev is extremely cross discipline There are different teams even within engineering team itself. Roughly can be categorized into 3 big parts Gameplay(design comes up with spec, you make shit happen). , engine (lower level system support gameplay) , graphics( similar to engine team but focus on rendering part)

Based on what you’re targeting, you can prepare accordingly.

If no previous industry experience, make some presentable game demos in some of these commercial engines.

Also good grasp on c++. Most if not all studio will require this

3D math is also required. Vectors. Cross dot products. Matrices. Quaternion

Then when you’re confident. Just apply online

yes amzn and riot are on point, esp amzn on "3D math", experience/capability there will be undeniably pertinent. i work in robotics and have a lot of similar material that is relevant in day-to-day dev. lots of linear alegbra and the like.

Just remember, its hard to get in, but you may realize you don't want to work very long hours for less pay than say, a front end pos.

You also need to have solid understanding of math.

It’s much easier to get into than tech. Best tips are to research that studio’s games, engines, and to not show up in anything but jeans for the interview. Helps if you know someone there, as is true with any job. Also be prepared to work things out on a whiteboard.

I’m also interested but every single position I’ve seen says shipped at least one AAA title, so I’ve given up

Bungie job descriptions don't require having shipped a game, but if you're looking for a senior gameplay engineer position without any experience working on gameplay feature then it's going to be a hard sell. However there are other positions that map reasonably well to other industries and you can come in as a senior to some of those.

10 yoe as hiring manager in games, 10 shipped AAA titles, over 50 million copies sold. DM me for advice or intros to studios that are hiring.

That said, I won't go back to games even if the pays was good.
