Working as QE, want to switch to PM role in SD

Apr 4, 2021 4 Comments

Currently working as a QE in Boston at MathWorks, very happy with my role and my company but unfortunately my partner got a job in SD, California. So, I’m looking to switch jobs and move to Cali. However, I’m interested in switching to PM role and was wondering if I could any tips, advice on how to build additional skills for the interviews? Anything in specific I need to keep in mind while prepping? I really want to crack the PM role at Microsoft because of the work life balance there, what are your thoughts? Is it bad to just have one company in mind or should I branch out to startups and other companies in SD area?

Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Update: Edited my post to target specifically SD after the comments and advice!

I would say, first of all talk to PM people to understand what they do. I've seen tons of staff/principal level PM who just suck at PM-ing, and I don't know how they got there. You don't want to be a mediocre PM, to be a good PM you have to have a compatible personality, and you need to have 1) high energy2) intelligence 3) integrity.

Getting the interview right is easy, but these things... not so much

there is zero chance you are going to “break into” PM at a big company with no yoe. and there is no “cali area”. it’s the 2nd biggest state isn’t it? might as well say “USA area”. SD is its own region. go for startups. good luck

I don’t want to discourage you but most likely you won’t even get an interview call for PM role. I would recommend that you join a company as a QA engineer and then try to switch to PM role internally. But you should still try for PM roles; who knows it might work or at least you will be able to clear doubts.

  • Check out Associate Product Manager roles as they require lesser or no prior PM experience, get referrals via blind or LinkedIn, and make your resume scream that you’ve done product-esque work. All the best.
